The candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, Hon. Olumide Jones, has criticized the Federal Government over what he described as its poor handling of the country’s worsening security situation.
Jones made his position known in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
According to him, the current state of insecurity across Nigeria is alarming and requires urgent attention from all stakeholders. He expressed concern over the increasing cases of kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism, describing the situation as a major threat to the nation’s peace and development.
The PDP candidate accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of failing to effectively address the country’s security challenges.
“It is unfortunate that the APC-led Federal Government has not been able to adequately manage the security situation, which has continued to deteriorate over the years,” he said.
Jones noted that criminal activities, particularly kidnapping and terrorism, which were once largely concentrated in parts of Northern Nigeria, have now spread to the South-West region, making life increasingly difficult for residents.
He attributed the development to what he described as the government’s inability to provide effective security measures and safeguard citizens.
“The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Any government that fails in this regard has fallen short of its fundamental duty to the people,” he stated.
The PDP candidate also referenced recent incidents of schoolchildren being kidnapped, expressing concern over what he described as the lack of significant progress in addressing such cases.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves while calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to combat criminal activities across the country.
Jones further lamented reports suggesting that kidnappers have established strongholds in various forest areas, warning that such developments pose serious threats to public safety.
He called on the Federal Government to urgently implement lasting solutions to the country’s security challenges, stressing that sustainable development cannot be achieved in an environment plagued by insecurity.
“There can be no meaningful development in a country where insecurity remains a major challenge. The government must act decisively and urgently to restore confidence in the nation’s security architecture,” he added.
