The Federal Government has closed down a mining site in Plateau State after no fewer than 37 villagers reportedly lost their lives from inhaling poisonous gases during local mining activities in Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area.
Ogunvoice reports that the tragic incident occurred when young men working in an underground pit were exposed to toxic fumes believed to have gathered in poorly ventilated tunnels.
Many of the victims were said to be between the ages of 20 and 35.
In addition to those who died, about 25 others were rushed to the hospital for treatment after breathing in what was suspected to be carbon monoxide.
Following the development, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, ordered the suspension of operations at Mining Licence 11810, which is operated by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited.
The licence is owned by Abdullahi Dan-China and covers an area located within specific longitude and latitude coordinates in Wase.
The directive was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori.
During a condolence visit to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, the minister expressed sorrow over the deaths and described the victims as citizens who were trying to survive through legitimate means.
He asked the governor to pass on his sympathy and support to the affected families and the entire Wase community.
To uncover what led to the tragedy, the minister has sent a high-level investigative team headed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Yusuf Yabo.
The team is made up of professionals in mining operations, environmental safety, and artisanal mining practices.
They have been asked to examine both the immediate and underlying causes of the gas leak and to advise the government on necessary actions, including possible penalties.
Officials disclosed that more details would be made public as investigations continue.
