FCT Polls: Politicians Have Turned Themselves Into Comedians – Ajibola Basiru Knocks ADC

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has mocked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its condemnation of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elections.

Speaking on Tuesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time, Basiru opined that the ADC is lamenting over the FCT elections because their candidate failed woefully.

He said while the APC is doing its best to mobilise, organise, create structure, and think ahead, others were eating groundnuts in markets and doing skits, stressing that such was not politics.

“Most of the time, people turn themselves to comedians because they are in the political space.

“We just had an election two weeks ago, and they are still saying the elections were not free and fair because their candidates lost woefully.

“Before the election, we saw them saying that the signpost for the 2027 election is the FCT polls. Out of 62 councilorship seats, they can’t win one. Out of six chairmanship seats, they can’t win one.

“On that same day, two bye-elections were held in Rivers and Kano states each and were won by the APC,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed how President Bola Tinubu’s instruction made the All Progressives Congress (APC) secure a majority of the seats in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

Recall that the APC emerged victorious in five of the six Area Council chairmanship positions in the FCT Area Council elections held on 21st February 2026.

Speaking on the development during his first monthly media parley for 2026 in Abuja, Wike explained why the APC prevailed.

According to him, Tinubu instructed him to visit satellite towns and ensure they felt the impact of governance.

He asserted that the key factor was the party’s focus on satellite towns rather than on the city centre.

Wike said, “Let’s tell ourselves the simple truth. Who would have beaten Asiwaju’s government in this FCT election if all we did was focus on the city? All over the years, ruling parties have struggled to win in the city because the people there talk a lot but rarely come out to vote.”

Wike, who revealed that he was personally appointed as a minister when President Tinubu took office, stressed the importance of extending governance beyond the city.

“The President said we must go to the satellite towns and let them feel the impact of governance, let them feel the impact of government.

“And we did that. When you go to places like Karu, Kabusa, Wasa, you see how happy the people are. That’s where the voters came out in numbers,” he said.

The minister also highlighted the difference between residents in the city and those in satellite towns.

“Where did people not come out? All of them are within the city. But when we reached the satellite towns, people voted and made their voices heard. That’s why APC was able to secure the majority of seats,” he added.
