The late Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is set to be buried in the holy city of Mashhad.
This development was confirmed in a report by the Fars news agency on Tuesday.
Ogunvoice recalls that Khamenei, who led Iran for 36 years, was killed on Saturday at 86 during a wave of attacks led by the United States and Israeli military.
It is understood that the slain leader, was originally from Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city, where his father is buried at the Imam Reza shrine.
Before the burial, a “large farewell ceremony” will be held in Tehran, the Revolutionary Guards said on their Telegram account.
No date has been disclosed for the burial.
After Khamenei’s death, power was entrusted to a three-man interim council, which includes the president, the head of the judiciary and a jurist from the Guardian Council until the Assembly of Experts elects his successor.
Fars, citing an official familiar with the process, reported that “for security reasons”, the assembly’s final meeting could be postponed until after Khamenei’s burial.
Meanwhile, the United States government has denied taking part in the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following a deadly strike carried out over the weekend.
Naija News reports that speaking before the Senate Armed Services Committee, a senior Pentagon official, Elbridge Colby, said the operation that led to Khamenei’s death was conducted by Israel and was not connected to any American military mission.
He explained that the action was an Israeli operation and not part of Washington’s campaign in the region.
Colby made this known while responding to questions from lawmakers who wanted to know if the United States was seeking a change of government in Iran.
He stated that such an objective was not behind American actions.
